More about this scene
St Margaret's church and the village lie in the Lune Valley, 9 miles from Lancaster. The church has a tower built by Sir Edward Stanley, Lord Monteagle to fulfil the vow he swore before his victory at Flodden Field in 1513 - his patron saint was St Margaret. (The song 'Flowers of the Forest' is a lament mourning the many Scottish dead who fell at that battle). Amongst the yew trees in the churchyard are medieval gravestones, one the well-known 'Loaves and Fishes' gravestone near the massive base of a Saxon cross. John Lingard, a Catholic priest who wrote a history of England, brought fame to Hornby - he died here in 1851.
