More about this scene
Originating from a 13th-century pele tower, the castle was largely rebuilt as a stately home during the 18th century. One owner, Sir Edward Stanley, fought at Flodden in 1513 and was subsequently created Lord Mounteagle for his valiant service. It is said that he built the tower of nearby St Margaret's Church as a thanksgiving for his safe return.
