More about this scene
Winding, hedge-bound lanes and low-built cottages thatched with wheat straw were typical of Inskip, Treales, Wharles and other Fylde villages. When thatch had to be replaced with corrugated iron, it was not unusual to find hidden objects: swords from Cromwellian days, chalices, contraband and coins, or precious items from shipwrecks. Some hovels became uninhabitable because rats or birds infested the thatch.
