Nostalgic memories of Jaywick's local history

Share your own memories of Jaywick and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My grandparents owned a beachfront bungalow and every summer from the year I was born, 1960, to when they sold it in 1970, we spend summers there. Does anyone remember the trampoline compound, where you could also hire boats? It was on the beach virtually in front of our bungalow and run by husband and wife, Harold and Vi. I remember every morning walking to Dots with my grandad to buy rolls and a ...see more
My uncle Steve owned a bungalow in Jaywick Sands, "Abijan", at 18 Lavender Walk where I spent my childhood bank holidays and annual six week school holiday between 1945 and 1953 and occasionally short breaks in later years, we got to know most of the holidaymakers in Lavender walk as most like us would visit at every opportunity throughout the year. My uncle owned an Morris 8 and my father a ...see more
I myself live in Battersea London , I was about six or seven at that time, and I had never seen the sea befor. Their was a neighbour who had a girl called yvonne and her brother malcombe and they asked my mother whether they could take me on holiday with them. The journey seem to take for ever not being the roads as they are today , I remember the four wheel bikes that you could hire, and the lorry ...see more
Jaywick has always been a very special place for me and most of my happiest childhood memories are from when my sister, myself, my parents and grandparents and our dog Sally would have our annual holiday there in the first week in June. We stayed in a lovely bungalow in Lake Way called 'Many Happy Returns' which we always called our Little Mauve House due to its colour. :) One vague memory has suddenly come to me and ...see more

My mum, dad, 2 brothers and 2 sisters lived at the bottom of Vauxhall Avenue - it was about 1963/64. It was a great place to live as kids, not so easy for my parents. We kids would collect water from the standpipe at the alleyway a few houses up and carry it back in enormous water containers - 2 jugs normally to last all day. There was no running water in the bungalow. no electricity, no toilet or bathroom. ...see more
I first discovered Jaywick when I was just ten years old in 1954. I was taken there by my parents in a 1936 Bedford Van to stay with my uncle Bill, aunt Flo and cousin Bill who was 6 months younger than me. This would be my first holiday and the first time I spent time away from my parents. We stayed in a tiny chalet just across the way from the Casino amusement arcade and skating rink. What fun we ...see more
I have had a long association with Jaywick - I am the organist at St Christopher`s church in Meadow Way. I was approached by Mrs Elsie Coleman (who was steward 'in charge' then) over thirty years ago to do a `temporary stint`. I loved the place then, and I do now - that`s why each week on Sunday I travel to this place (I live the other side of Clacton-on-sea) in Meadow way. Jaywich has suffered much adversity over the ...see more
Myself and my family have great fond memories of our yearly holidays in Jaywick. There would be mum, dad and us 4 kids and we would stay in Meadow Way usually, I think it was number 322, almost opposite the Las Vegas bingo and amusements. I remember the bingo caller being called Sid, he didn't need a microphone he was so loud! Every year we would go there along with uncles and aunties and ...see more
It would be lovely if people had pictures of Jaywick in the 70s to post on this site. We had such lovely times there and I would love to see how it looked in the 70s again - the bus station, the arcade, the beach etc. We did not have much money so didn't take many photos. I remember there was another little arcade just on the corner opposite the post office - by the road that ran along the sea. It must've closed in ...see more
