It was from inns and taverns along here that coaches used to arrive and depart. From the Bay Horse there was a coach to Selby; from the Elephant & Castle there was one to Thirsk, Leeds, York and Harrogate. From the Black Swan, a wagon ran every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to York.
