Launceston, St Stephen's Church And Old Toll House 1906

More about this scene
The Toll House at St Stephens was built in 1761 by the Launceston Turnpike Trust, which had come into being the previous year with the intention of 'widening and keeping in repair several roads leading to the Borough of Launceston'. The Trust lasted until 2 March 1880, when it was wound up and its profits distributed among the new Highways Boards. The tolls had been collected for the last time in November of the preceding year, an occasion marked with some glee in the town — the church bells were rung to celebrate.
