This is all pedestrianised now, and no double decker bus is to be seen in this part of the High Street. The High Street is in fact the Roman Ermine Street, and it goes all the way through the city. The sign for the medieval High Bridge Restaurant can just be seen next to the bus. Just as important today as it was in 1955 is the motto 'that one is never too young to begin saving' – note the poster on the left. The bridge, which has Norman work in it, is over the river Witham, and its railings can be seen on the right of the street. It is an unusual and different sensation to be sitting and eating in the upstairs of the restaurant and see a boat go underneath. The block of buildings incorporating the Hotel Central and Lennards shoe shop (right) all have different occupants.
