More about this scene
Iron was the main industry in Maesteg for 50 years, but by 1887 the last furnace had closed. Demand for steam coal caused collieries to be developed, and over a million tons of coal were mined annually. However, working people today pursue their jobs in modern industrial estates, or commute to adjoining towns. Previously known as 'Bowrington Street' after Dr John Bowring, Commercial Street is still home to the Sawyers Arms.
