IWAS BORN PATRICIA ANN MACHON IN HOVE SUSSEX IN 1943 BUT CAME TO LIVE IN MAESTEGLOVED MY STAY IN MAESTEG AND MADE A FEW FRIENDS THERE, I WENT TO PLASNEWYD IN 1948 AND MET A FEW GOOD FRIEND THEN WENT ON TO LLYNDERW SCHOOL I THINK I KNEW SANDRA SHE IS AROUND MY AGE,, I ALSO HAVE RELATIVES BY THE NAME OF STONE AND I BELEAVE THEY LIVED IN MAESTEG I STARTED MY NURSE TRAINING IN 1961 IN A LOVELY LITTLE COTTAGE HOSPITAL, LOVED ...see more
I was born in Quarella Road Hospital in Bridgend, but grew up on Cwmdu Street, Maesteg. Often went to the top of the street to get sweets and pop for myself, and a fresh gooseloaf for my mother. I remember it as a very happy time and place to grow up, with plenty of local friends, and a safe environment.
My sister, Helen, and I lived at No. 3 Plasnewydd Street and, although Helen now lives in Lechlade in Gloucestershire and I have finally come to rest (no, not dead - yet) in Cardiff, we talk every week and often reminisce about our happy childhood in Maesteg - about people and places and things which happened. I used to look forward to the Town Hall dance, the place used to be packed. Those were the days of "Teddy boy suits", jive and bebop. I was born in Grove Street, Nantyffyllon but grew up in Llwydarth Road, but funnily enough spent most of my teenage years back in Nanty doing my courting. Does anyone remember the 21 Cafe? We used to gather there and have a steamed pie and coffee.
