More about this scene
The 'Fairy Queen', a passenger-carrying vessel, is seen on the Manchester Ship Canal during the early months after its opening. Ships of 12,500 tons deadweight can travel the full length of the canal, and its construction encouraged industry along its banks. Oil refineries and many household consumer-goods names had or have premises along this canal.
