More about this scene
Masham received its market charter in 1250 and became known for its sheep fairs; you can see the pens in the background. The market would bring in farmers and dealers from miles around, for up to 80,000 sheep and lambs were offered for sale. The lower part of the tower of St Mary's, which we see here from the spacious Market Place, is 11th-century. The elegant octagonal-based spire was added during the 15th century, and is a landmark for miles around.
