More about this scene
A Sussex legend recalls how St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, met with the Devil at Mayfield. The wooden church built by St Dunstan was destroyed in a disastrous fire in 1389, along with most of the other buildings in the surrounding village. The spire of the present church can be seen at the top of West Street.
