Nostalgic memories of Medge Hall's local history

Share your own memories of Medge Hall and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My name is Maureen Poulastides (nee Pye). I lived on the farm that was close to the canal and railway line/signal box around 1954 until about 1958, I don't remember exactly. My Dad, Norman Pye was a farm labourer there. My mother is Ada (Pat), they would have been 33 years old. I would have been 9, and my brother Norman 8, and my sister Beryl 1-2 years old. We used to play on the farm and down by/in the canal. I ...see more

Reading Shane's memories brought back happy memories to me of holidays at Medge Hall. My Aunt Ada & Uncle Bill lived at Charity Cottages, near the Bridge, and I used to visit them on holidays to stay with Peter & David (twins), Jennifer and Geoffrey, my cousins. Uncle Bill was a shepherd then and we often breakfasted on giant mushrooms he brought home. Jennifer, Shane's mum and I used to go ...see more
I spent my first seven years at Medge Hall, and have fond memories of growing up with my brother Phillip, and baby sister Sheryl. We lived in Crook-a-Moor cottages (the 2nd house from the bridge) until around 1970. My mother and father, Jenny Graham and Winston Noble, had family in the area. My grandfather Bill Graham and his wife Ada lived just up the road, and we had many an adventure around his farmyard.
My grandad was Joseph Witty who farmed at Medgehall, the farmhouse used to be just across the level crossing. I can remember the station master being called Mr Bull, he had a lot of children. My grandad retired in the mid 1960s but we visited every other Saturday, until he retired. I can also remember them getting milk from Till's in the old wide-necked milk bottles, there was always a lot of ...see more
Sheila nee Till. I was born at Medgehall in 1935 at the farm near the Signal Box, when I was 3 years old we moved to Groves Farm, Chapel Road which was where my grandfather lived, Mr A W Till.  lived there until I got married in 1957, so I have a lot of good memories of my childhood days: the Chapel where I went to Sunday School, and swimming in the canal. There used to be a school at Medge Hall, we then to High Level School near Black Bull, a school bus would take us there.
