The Creek

A Memory of Millbrook.

I, my sisters and my cousins often spent our summer holidays in the 50's with my Grandmother (Ivy Eddy nee Bryant) in her cottage by the culvert as shown in the photo of the creek. The boat wreck in the picture was a sailing barge owned by the Eddy's for hauling coal up to Millbrook from Devonport. The coal was then sacked up and distributed around the village by my Grandfather on a cart pulled by a mule they called Buller (named after the famous General Buller).

Many fond memories of mucking around in boats, crabbing, ratting with terriers on the rubbish dump and spending days on the beach with a similar aged boy from next door whose parents had a chalet out at Whitsand Bay. Playing 'Knock-Down-Ginger' down the narrow Millbrook streets, going to the cinema with all the local kids and being threatened with eviction if we did not behave ourselves (they and we never did!). Watching Mr Arnold shoe horses across the Square in the Blacksmith's shop.
