Hillcross Avenue

There used to be a Residents' Club near or in Hillcross Avenue. Is it still there? I used to go there every Saturday evening with a group of friends - the names I remember are Brian Hepburn, David Hilliker, Geoff Harris,Mike Padden, Chris, Sid, Mary, Jill, Jean

Yes the Central ward residence club is still there and some of your friends are names are familier. I lived at 52 Ashridge way and went often to the club. tom Paddern was the President and our crowd consisted of Alan Havard, John Clemens and Mike Hyde. Cliff hope was another member and Fred was the Barmen. We had all come from the Endeavour Club at the bottom of Ashridge way (Martin Way. Although it was a long time ago I still remember my club number 1250. Had a great time at the club and played snooker with Charles Payne who ran Cartiers of Bond St workshop and he made my now wifes engagement ring and also the wedding ring. Nice to see comments as I now live up around Bedford but I have been to the club a couple of times when in Morden.

I lived at 106 Hillcross Ave during the 1980's was a member of The Ashridge Club where Charlie Drake turned up on a regular basis, my house backed onto the school between Monkleigh Road and Ashridge Way ..........

I lived in 14, Westcroft Gardens, off Martin Way. I recall that we were in Surrey, but the other side of the Martin Way was London SW20! My primary school was in Hillcross Avenue, still there a few years ago. Our junior school headmaster had lost a leg in one of the two wars and used to cycle to and from the school up Shaldon Drive, quite a steep hill from the school. I was there from 1943 to 1948. We ran to air raid shelters on the grassed area when the sirens went off and had lessons down there. Later, I went to Merton CofE Secondary School in Merton Park, on the corner of Melrose Road and Church Lane. also only yards from London, SW19! The school taught boys and girls,, but not together! It was demolished, but the facade kept and it's now flats! We ate lunch in the School Hall, then like a tin tabernacle, but now some hideous concrete monstrosity. The cottage next to the hall, towards Mostyn Road, used to house all our cycles, for a few pence a week.Some of the male teachers I recall were Mr Jones (Art), MMr Griffiths (Science), Mr Marshall (Woodwork) and Mr Batts.
