More about this scene
Today, the chapel, with its distinctive green dome, is all that remains of the old Royal Victoria Military Hospital, opened in 1868 and demolished in 1966. The building was an incredible quarter of a mile long and cost more than £300,000 to construct. The sick, dying and injured were brought here from the war-torn corners of the British Empire; the 570-ft-long pier enabled casualties to be carried ashore from troop ships.
