More about this scene
This flight of locks is probably on the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal, which was built between 1797 and 1812 for transporting stone from Brecon to Newport for export, and for moving processed lime from Talybont on Usk. The valleys' canal systems developed throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and led to the development of Newport as a port. By the end of the 18th century it had become the principal coal port in south Wales; all this from what half a century before had been little more than a few wharves.
