More about this scene
Newport's most famous landmark, the transporter bridge (or aerial ferry), was opened in 1906. In the latter half of the 18th century the east bank of the River Usk had been developed, and a new structure was needed to link it with the west bank. The low level of the banks on either side and the high tidal range meant that conventional bridge designs were not practical, and so Haynes and Arnodin engineered a bridge that could be operated without obstructing shipping - one of only five such structures in the world.
