Hague St Primary School.

A Memory of Newton.

HI, I lived at 14 Aspel Street, Newton Heath, Manchester 10, and I went to Hague Street primary school from 1956 to 1965, then on to Saint Mary's secondary school.
We were very poor and unfortunately, due to ill health I was constantly sent to different clinical homes including the magnificent Great Morton Hall in Cheshire to recuperate, so I can hardly remember anyone from that time apart from a little girl with blonde pig tails. At the age of ten I was madly in love with Beverly Woods and she knew it. She asked for a piece of my orange one day, so I agreed, but only if she would give me a kiss. After a moment she said, 'Yes, alright.' I puckered up and leaned in for that special moment. Our lips briefly touched and she ran off with my orange laughing. I didn't care, just to have had that tiny kiss was more than compensation for a lost orange.
I've searched everywhere for photos of Hague Street school but have only been able to find a video of the school as it was falling to pieces. My name then was William Tansey ( I changed it for personal reasons to Seymour) and I had brothers: John, Denis and Alan, and sisters: Jean, Pat, Margaret, Linda and Christine.
We used to walk up Bispham Street to Thorpe road, turn left and go over the bridge above the railway lines to watch trains puffing by. My Uncle worked on the trains and we sometimes waved and shouted to him. Then we'd walk on to the local tip to search for old toys and comics.
Like lots of kids we played football on the Red Wreck. I think that was on Ten Acres Lane. And we went to the Magnet Cinema to see Roy Rodgers and the Three Stooges whenever we had the requisite 6d.
