Nostalgic memories of Newton's local history

Share your own memories of Newton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Who grew up in Cheetham, Bury New Road and Mazeppa St?
I use to live at 287 Oldham Road opposite the Forresters Arms public house. I used to play around with Carl Johnston, Angela McLeavly (known as 'bones' in her teens), Michelle Shaw and Carolin Nicholson, they lived on Frank Street. My memories are of going to the chippy on Oldham Road near the old Midland Bank, and spending time playing on Frank Street, and what we called 'the brew' which ...see more

Hague Street was a very good school under the then headmaster, Alf Collier, a benevolent dictator, who retired when I left in 1936. Half a dozen years ago I visited ...see more
Hi, I was born in Harpurhey but moved to Newton Heath in about 1949. I went to Hague Street School till I was 11, then on to St Mary's Road Secondary Modern. Hague Street was a nice school, we all seemed to get on very well, our head teacher was Mr Sowerbutts, quite a genial chap as I remember. If you got a merit award in class, you would go to Mr Sowerbutt's office on a Friday, ...see more
