Oakengates' most famous personality was the son of a local coal-miner. Sir Gordon Richards (born in 1904) won his first race at Leicester in 1921; by the time he retired, he had ridden 4,870 winners - truly a Champion Jockey, the name of a pub in nearby Donnington!
