Growing Up In Ombersley In The 1950’s

A Memory of Ombersley.

In this photo of the island, the half timbered house on the left was owned by Mrs Rees and she sold ice creams and sweets from her back door. Opposite is another shop that you stepped down into run by my (Great? ) Aunt Ginnie.
I am Rodney Warner and lived in Ombersley from 1948 till we moved in 1957. There were 3 families of Warner's in the village, but now scattered around the world.
Like my male cousins, I sang in the church choir. The choirmaster was Tommy Styles (Stiles) who was also the local school headmaster. He gave me piano lessons as well.
My paternal grandparents lived in Haylane in a row of houses now longer there. Tiny house with outside chemical toilet where 11 or 12 children were raised.
Played cricket and football in the road, roamed free down Turn Mill Lane and across the fields in front of Sandys Court.Fished in the Severn without a licence. Wonderful memories!
