More about this scene
Several coastal churches, including the one at Orford, have been reduced in size by blocking off the eastern end. These parishes were wealthy ports in the medieval period when the churches were built, but then suffered decline when their harbours silted up or trade decreased. At Orford the chancel of c1166 was an outstanding piece of Norman architecture six bays long with vaulted aisles, of which only these arches remain.
