More about this scene

This building stands at the northern end of The Parade; it was built in 1926 on the site of a former coaching inn, the Pengwern Arms, which had to be demolished in 1885 following storm damage. It originally functioned as a café, serving visitors who chose to stroll along the promenade from the town or those who braved the cool seawater at Parkgate baths. The baths were situated just to the north of the Boat House, where Gayton Sands Nature Reserve car park now stands. The Boat House is now an inn and restaurant.

My Grandma And My Mother.
I was so pleased to see this photo in a Francis Frith book. The two ladies in the foreground are my Grandma and my Mother. Grandma was Mrs. Archie Turner (1892-1974) who lived in Whitford Road, Birkenhead. My Mother, Mrs. Clifford Bolt (1916-2003) lived in Arthur Street, Birkenhead. I think this photo could have been taken in the 1950s. Memory from Margaret Halpin (nee Bolt.)

Parkgate
I grew up in Parkgate. Now reside in California where I have lived since 1981. I believe the grocery store which is now an art gallery was Howes and Mr Chow's was Prossors store. Remember buying sweets from 'Mr Dooley'. Anyone remember him?

Ice Cream
Used to often go there for a drive on a Sunday, get an ice cream and walk along the prom.

The Little Ice Cream Shop
The little ice cream shop next to the Copper Grill has the best ice cream in Parkgate. I have been going there for about 25 years. I love Parkgate, it's a lovely place now and always has been.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
