Sunnyside Road

A Memory of Parkstone.

I was born opposite J Wareham's corner shop (on the corner of Fortescue Road) and went to Heatherland's Junior School in Cromwell Road. Where Cromwell Road joined Albert Road there was a cobblers on one corner and a second hand shop (Wilf's?) on the other. Heatherlands (teachers: Mr Asprey, Simmonds, Mrs Jones, Bond and headmasters TT Taylor followed by Gerald Swan) has gone and is now houses. Subsequently I went to Kemp Welch Boys in Herbert Avenue and sang at the grand opening of the magnificent organ that had been built by pupils and teachers over about 6 years. At Kemp Welch there was cross-country running and we had to run along Herbert Ave and Alderney Avenue to the heath at the back. Run down a grassy slope, through a small brook up the other side and back in through the school playing fields. We then had to try and wash mud and mess off ourselves in a row of sinks - no such things as shower. I believe all that heath has now beenbuilt on.
When I left school I worked at the Regal Cinema, Wendover Hotel (County Gates), Morton Rowlands Photographic in Bournemouth, Malmesbury & Parsons Dairy and Cosy Coaches in Parkstone - and I think every one of those has long gone!
