More about this scene

The George Hotel, top left, spans the entrance to the Market Arcade in Devonshire Street. It led into a covered market built between 1860 and 1866, a venue much used for meetings and entertainment. On the same side, behind the Musgrave Monument are the white ashlar premises erected for the National Provincial Bank, now housing the National Westminster Bank. Angel Lane is seen on the far right; at the top of the block flanking it once stood the Fleece Inn, and at the lower corner was situated the Angel Inn.

Grandfather's Story
After reading another memory of Askham, I can remember a story my grandfather told me when I was a child. He was born in Askham in 1893 and was Christened in Askham church. His father was the Police Constable at the time and his mother worked in Lowther Castle. Schooldays
When I was at the Grammar School, I used to do my mothers shopping on this street; I bought my first pair of earrings from Woolworths, on the mid-left, for a shilling - 5p!! and my mum bought shoes from the shop near left. My French form teacher, Mr Paul Johnson and his wife and twin daughters lived in a flat on the left; he was a navigator on Wellingtom bombers during the war. Bailiff Family
My Bailiff ancestors came from Askham. My g.g. grandfather Christopher's sister, Elizabeth, 1801, married William Henry Leech, 1795, whose father John Langton Leech, 1761, died in Askham and was the Vicar at Askham. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
