More about this scene
Oliver Cromwell once came to spend the night at Ripley Castle, home of Sir William and Lady Ingilby. Sir William was absent, but Lady Ingilby did not hesitate to tell the general that she would not admit him. Lady Ingilby was eventually persuaded to let Cromwell in, though when she met him at the lodge gate she was wearing a pair of pistols. The next morning as he prepared to depart, Lady Ingilby made it perfectly plain that had Cromwell not behaved peaceably he would not have been leaving the house alive.
