When this picture was taken, Ripley consisted of just one street. The village was extensively remodelled in the 1820s, though parts of the parish church date from the 14th century. This picture shows the cobbled square, complete with stocks and the village cross. In the churchyard is what is claimed to be the only weeping cross in the whole of Yorkshire. Around the base are eight niches in which to kneel and repent.
