More about this scene
The cathedral library was started in 1624 when Dean Higgin bequeathed his collection of books to the Chapter. Visitors in the 1880s could have inspected a 13th-century illuminated Bible, and an illuminated Psalter once used during festivals associated with St Wilfrid. Lewis Carroll, son of the first canon of the cathedral, visited his father here in Ripon over a span of 20 years. He was inspired by cathedral carvings of a lion, an elephant on the back of a turtle and the curious creatures carved on the misericords in the choir. He first told the tale of Alice in Wonderland in July 1862, after ten years of visits to Ripon and its magnificent cathedral.
