This once thickly-wooded dell on both sides of the River Spodden had been thinned out somewhat by the 1890s. Byron brought his distant kinswoman Mary Ann Chaworth, with whom he was in love, here when they visited Rochdale and were staying as the guests of Thomas Fferrand.
