More about this scene
A medieval church stood outside the castle walls but it was largely destroyed during the Civil War. The present church of St Leonard was begun in 1650 but has continued to be altered, with Gothic style windows in 1843, the raising of the roof and the addition of a north aisle in the 1860s. The photograph shows the church built into a steep slope with the castle walls behind. The marble memorials in the chancel and chapel are of the highest quality.
