Nostalgic memories of Roydon's local history

Share your own memories of Roydon and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Hansells Mead in 1946 and was brought up their with my brother and sister. Mum and Dad, Winnie and Bill Peachment, had moved into the house when it was newly built in 1939. We all attended Roydon School. Dad was involved with the Football Club and I was brought up on football. I remember Saturday mornings involved pumping up the ball and coating the leather with dubbin, dad also used to mark ...see more
I was at Kingsmead boarding school in the early 50s and we used to walk to this church (crocodile style) on Sundays.  After church (we were usually taken out before communion), we would walk back to school where the smell of our Sunday dinner filled the air.  I can still smell it.  The best meal of the week.  Kingsmead was later turned into offices (I think in the late 60s) but don't know what it is now.
We used to sit and have a rest for five mins on the bench behind the gates when visiting my Step Nan.
This is the church where most of my mum's stepsisters and brothers got married, as well as my nan after my grandad died.
We used to walk past this war memorial on the way to my Step-Nan's.
My grandfather was the lock-keeper at Roydon Lock after he came out of the army after the First World War. He had to have an outside job as he was shot in the neck and also mustard-gassed.
We used to walk up here from the station to visit my Stepnan.
When I was young I walked up this road many times with my sister and mum to see my Stepgran and my Aunts and Uncles. My Dad was born in Linlithgo Lanackshire Scotland .So no photos of where he was born
Many a time my family went up this road from Harlow Mill to see my stepgran and my aunts and uncles who lived in Roydon.
Fedsden a large white house just outlying the nearby hamlet of Roydon. Was it to become the nursing Hospital of the 1940's or a School in the 1950's? Is this the same place that Ralph Fowler was born? Any idea as to the current title and address? A long lost family member was once 'in service'at Fedsden.
