In the early 19th century, the colliery at Brereton nearby was connected by rail to a wharf, which enabled coal to be transported along the Trent and Mersey canal. Through the trees we can see the roof of the house in which William Palmer was born in 1824. A new bridge now carries traffic on the busy Station Road.

My great grandparents lived in Yardlrys Entry, Horsefair, Rugeley. I know this as it is on my grandfather's birth certificate - Alfred Johnson. In 1919 he was a Corporal in the i/6 north staffs regiment 240380. He had been in France but must have had some leave spring 1918 as Arthur was born Jan 1919! He had been a coal miner. Once home they had a few more - making 13! I think he was very lucky to have come through it ...see more
Learnt to dance in there Miss Walsh she married John ? I visited them many years later when they lived Leicester way. Also caught up with Betty and John Griffith (Dec) living in Weeping Cross outside Stafford. I have kept in contact with Betty over the years, another call is imminent. Left in July 1955. Now living in Australia, since 1966. Happy to make contact, also on Facebook.
In the late 1960’s I was a pupil at a nearby preparatory school (Bishton Hall) and used to enjoy walking via Colton to Rugeley as well as the main A51. Walking up towards Admaston was a bit far as I was only eight years old but I did walk up there on a few occasions. Now as a driver I explore the area and go around other nearby areas, but I always enjoy parking by Blithfield Reservoir for a look and walk around. Sometimes I enjoy a walk around Colton too.

I'm doing research on my family history and I believe my grandfather owned a store in Rugeley circa 1955/1960 for many years.
His name was Sydney Morley, and the store was simply "Morley's" I believe.
Would be interesting if anyone noted it or knew anything about it!
