More about this scene
Viewed from the Close and looking East, the room with the large window over the Gate was a chapel belonging to Malmesbury House, the front of which can be seen to the left of the picture. Malmesbury House was a 13th- century canonry, substantially rebuilt in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren. Charles ll stayed there; so did the composer Handel, who may well have performed there.
