Children of the famous Gurney family (one of the founders of Barclays' Bank) stayed in lodgings in this street, on the site of the present Boots the chemist.
In 1865, George Wander, a Swiss chemist, devised a new malted barley nutritional drink called Ovaltine.
Martins Bank (right) was acquired by Barclays in 1969. The elms on the left of Chapel Lane were removed in 1975 because of the ravages of Dutch elm disease.
In the 14th century there are accounts of crops of oats, wheat, and barley being grown locally, and local livestock included cows and sheep.
On the north side of the Market Square Barclays Bank, which had taken over the local bank in 1896, erected an imposing new building in 1901.
Besides the new developments are a number of interesting conversions including the old Barclays Bank in Commercial Street which is being turned into 56 apartments, and the Pinstone Chambers Building
