Littleheath Road

A Memory of Selsdon.

I lived on Littleheath Road (No 32) until 1976 when we moved to Purley when I was 8. Both my brother (Nick Storey) and I went to Selsdon Primary/Jnr Schools. Our house backed on to Selsdon Woods and I remember there was a flag pole in the middle of the back garden. Names I remember form back then, Peter Stringer, The Jilks family who moved to Burwash in Sussex & bought a farm, the Bliss family Frank & Anne?? and their sons Stephen and Andrew. Also remember Mark and Claire Ashby who lived on Foxearth Lane. I still remember the day Croydon Council saw fit to fence across all the direct accesses to the woods from rear gardens. I still have many memories of playing in the woods, building dams across the stream, long happy summers when it never rained!!!

My house backed on to Littleheath woods too. I used to spend a lot of time climbing trees running in that huge meadow and not coming home till dinner time. I also remember the deep snow and one time it was so deep that the schools were closed.

When mum and I went shopping at the Sainsburys we would take our corgi dog Sally and tie her to the post that was at the bottom of the alley that dropped down from Littleheath to the Main Street then pick her up to walk back through the woods home.
