More about this scene
Here we see the Shandon, a large hydropathic establishment which stands in its own grounds. The hydropathic movement started in the 1830s using ordinary water and offering a variety of treatments, including Turkish, Russian, sitz baths, electrical, douche and vapour. Treatment often involved strict dietary regimes and a lot of cold water.
