Shefford is a small market town with Royal Charters dating back to the 13th century. It owes its name and its foundation to the five roads that meet in the town and the fact that at this point it was possible to ford the rivers Hit and Flit. Shefford is a corruption of Sheep Ford - possibly the title bestowed by herders as they moved their flocks across the River Ivel at this point to stay ahead of Danish invaders. On the right of the High Street, the building with the ornate stonework is the Catholic Church of St Francis, built in 1884. The sacristy was originally the chapel of St George - the first chapel to be built in Bedfordshire after the Reformation. A small statue of St George is mounted to the side of the entrance to the church. At the far end of the street is the parish church of St Michael and All Angels.
