Hutton (Hall?) Orphanage c.1925
A Memory of Shenfield.
My Dad was at Hutton from 1925. He died when I was 16. He spoke about his time in the orphanage a little and we went to an open day some time during the 1960s. His name was James Turner although when older people called him Jim; maybe they did at school as well. When his older sister and brothers came to collect him, he had the wrong name on his label, it was James Brown. However, they recognised him, pointed out the mistake, and took him 'home.'
It is now 100 years since he was in the orphanage so most, if not all, who knew him will have passed on. However, perhaps there are some of his friends' children, like me, who wonder what life was like during their time there. I know very little about life in their orphanage, perhaps you know more that you'd like to share.
Hoping to hear from you, David
