I remember that postage stamp machine outside the post office. If you put a halfpenny in the penny slot & flicked it in forcefully you obtained a penny stamp. My mother made me & a friend, who shall remain nameless, return all the stamps back to the office. We got a rollicking from the postmaster, who said it would take him ages to sell these stamps. However he didn't return our halfpennies!! Karma x2!
I was born in Leeds Yorkshire, but my maternal grandmother and other relatives lived in Skelmanthorpe. My earliest memories are of being the first grandchild and visiting grandma every Christmas to celebrate. This was my school transported from Birdsedge to school each day, quite a trip. Lots of great memories, 1949-50-51- those were the years I attended. I remember the school flat we got to play house for a whole week and miss the regular classes. Doreen Osborne
I was born 1949 in Huddersfield and lived in Skelmanthorpe until 1970. I was delighted to see the photos of Skelmanthorpe taken in the fifties. It brought back wonderful childhood memories of things that I'd already forgotten. I remembered going to Bower's Newsagent to pay for our papers once every week, the chemist shop next door and then there was a greengrocer nearby called Wraggs if I remember rightly. ...see more
