Southend On Sea, The Beach 1898

More about this scene
There are still remnants of Southend's more select era when it became a fashionable seaside resort after 1791: Royal Terrace and the Royal Hotel, for example. The railway arrived in the 1850s, and Southend expanded rapidly. This view captures its earlier atmosphere, including bathing machines; the gigantic, coarse Palace Hotel of 1901 behind the pier had not yet been built.
