The Frith archive consists of photographs taken for possible use as a postcard. At first, postcards had to be placed inside an envelope before they could be posted, but in 1894 the rule was relaxed and they were allowed to be posted at half the normal letter rate. However, it was not until 1902 that messages could be written on them.
