More about this scene
Crown Street connects the Bullock Market and Market Hill. It takes its name from the Crown public house (right) opposite the turning to Bridge Street, now occupied by Woolworth`s. Next door, with the two gabled doorways, stands the post office, built in 1887 on the site of the Old Court House. It was totally demolished in 1986 and rebuilt in a sympathetic style - it incorporates some of the original features, including the carved plaque in the roof apex. It is now occupied by a branch of Superdrug. Barclays Bank on the extreme right was built in the early 19th century. It is now owned by Dewhurst the butcher, and apart from a rather more modern frontage, survives intact.
