More about this scene
This famous coaching inn was one of 14 inns or ale-houses in the village in the 19th century. When the A1 by-pass was opened in 1959 the village declined; the Bell closed in 1963, almost becoming derelict. New owners in the 1980s brought a fresh lease of life, and it is now a popular hotel and conference centre.
