Local lore says that the buildings were clustered so tightly around the Square to keep the wind off the farmers on market days. Daniel Defoe records in his 'Tour of Britain' that 20,000 sheep were sold at Stow-on-the-Wold market in the year prior to his visit.

My relatives lived in Stow in the 1600's. George Churm married Anne Spurrior on the 29 Sept 1695 at Stow Church. George's father, George, was born at Stow in 1630; his father Lawrence was born
in 1600 and married Anne(?) at Stow Church in 1620. Please contact me if you have any further info into the Churm, Spurrior ,Lawrence , Cairn or Webb families of Stow or Wyck Rissington.
