Streatham Astoria Cinema On Sunday Afternoon

A Memory of Streatham.

I remember going to the Astoria cinema in Streatham High Road mainly to flirt with the boys in the back row upstairs. One such lad was someone called Wizz. He lived near Eardley Road at Streatham Vale. He was gorgeous, a Tyrone Power look alike. Anyone know what happened to him? We used to go for walks at Tooting Bec, near the athletic sports ground, I carved his name on my machine at work at Kempats, in Western Road Mitcham. He wore a long white scarf which sounds a bit naff now but it gave him a gypsyish kind of look. He was so romantic. I loved to swim at Streatham baths, but it had a very slippery floor! Also a place to go was Abercairne rec, and my friend Joy and I used to sing our hearts out and I used to harmonise, we always landed up in hysterics. I always loved jazz even at 14 and I went to a party near there one night, and someone played a record of Woody Hermans 'Lemon Drop', I was made up. I used to go to Rowan Road School, at the Streatham end of Mitcham, and went out with a Howard Parker, I wonder what happened to him too? We used to walk down Lovers Lane near Paynes fire work factory, so innocent! Anyone share these memories?? My name was Pat Fisher then.

Havn't been back to Streatham for years. Now live in East Sussex. Went to Streaham Grammar School early 50s. and lived in Norbury. We used to hold our sports day at the Tooting Bec sports ground but running was not my forte. Not really being an academic most of my time was spent at 1/. Streatham Ice Rink and supporting the Indians. 2/. Tooting Bec Lido opposite the Sports ground. 3/. Riding a bike. The school was the only one I know that used to hold a time trial from the school up to Burgh Heath and back. My claim to fame was breaking the record which my friends brother broke around 3 years later.Still riding the bike. A bit older and it was the Locarno which had a night club above but can't remember if it was the Bali Hi. Remember the Theatre well.

Bali hi was above Streatham ice rink sadly all gone Tescos now
It was the Stork Night Club and the Bali Hai was upstairs at the Silver Blades Ice Rink.
Sorry, Stork Night Club was upstairs at the Locarno Ballroom.
There used to be another Night Club next to the Bedford Arms Pub opposite Streatham Station entrance, does anyone remember what it was called, i think Charlie Richardson used to own it.
