More about this scene
Here we are reminded that before the building of the bus station in Merrywalks, buses waited at several locations in the town. By 1955 both Russell Street and George Street had become one way, as the road signs indicate. Walter Wells (left) sold clocks - one of which survives in the Union Street Schoolroom - and jewellery, hence the ring sign above his shop front. The writer's cousin, Sidney Pearce, two doors down, advertised his saddlery business in a similar way with a model of a horse's head mounted on the wall. Sims' clock, one of Stroud's architectural curiosities, is in the foreground. A trough formerly stood by it for the use of the horses pulling early buses.
