More about this scene
The main road from London originally climbed Angel Hill's ridge, but in the early 19th century a cutting was made. According to local legend this was created at the order of the Prince Regent, who used the London to Brighton road to travel to his Pavilion by the sea at Brighton. Other sources say the cutting was made in the 1770s as part of the turnpiking of the main road. Whichever version is true, the cutting remains at its original width, and this view shows the rather elegant Victorian footbridge that crosses the main road.
