More about this scene
Former 'quarr houses' and stone workings (bottom left) can be seen here beside Durlston Bay (lower right) which revealed fossils of the first marsupial-type mammals that succeeded the dinosaurs. Peveril Point and its strata of Purbeck marble jut out seawards (centre right) with the chalk cliffs of Ballard Point (top right) rising northwards across Swanage Bay. The cliff path, landscaped between stone walls, became Isle of Wight Road.
