More about this scene
The 18th-century Royal Hop Pole Hotel on the right- hand side of the street, with its wrought iron, flower- bedecked canopy and window boxes, is featured in Charles Dickens's 'Pickwick Papers', when Pickwick and his three companions dine there on their way from Bristol to Birmingham; they consume bottled ale, Madeira and four bottles of port. Further along is a 17th-century timber-framed building with a double overhang, whose lintel is dated 1664.
